Located in a historic Atlanta neighborhood, 501 Edgewood is a four-story mixed-use expansion using mass timber over an existing steel masonry commercial building. This overbuild showcases how mass timber can be used to modernize existing structures while meeting modern sustainability standards. The project’s sustainable design incorporates mass timber to reduce carbon emissions and blend into the historic fabric of the community, adjacent to the future Beltline light rail.

Innovative Project Approach

  • 501 Edgewood is an infill development that is a vertical addition onto an existing building. This mass timber use case emphasizes the light nature of building with wood over concrete and steel.
  • The project applicant is the owner of Welborn Henson, a local millwork manufacturing company that produces custom millwork throughout the Southeast. The company is interested in participating in the manufacture of some of the building’s components to eventually become part of the mass timber supply chain.
